Finding the right gift for the occasion can present a challenge, though. Flowers wilt, chocolates get eaten, and they don’t let you take home the robe at the spa anymore. A beautiful, handmade card, though? That’s a ‘thank you’ that lasts forever!

To celebrate Mothers’ Day, we’re letting you, our PNA family, in on the secrets of how to create the perfect, heartfelt Mother’s Day card for the most special lady in your life. We’re also highlighting some of our fave DIY products to make that happen. Make this Mother’s Day the most heartfelt expression of love yet, with help from PNA.

What’s the importance of Mother’s Day?

Mother’s Day is an important occasion celebrated annually to honour and appreciate the role of mothers – and mother figures – in our lives. It is a day to express gratitude and love for the sacrifices and hard work that mothers have made to raise and nurture their children. We’re all here because of our moms, and they deserve to know how much we adore them.

The celebration of Mother’s Day dates back to ancient times, but the modern-day occasion can be traced back to the early 20th century when it was first celebrated in the United States. Since then, it has become a global tradition, observed in households all around the world. Moms play a critical role in raising children and instilling values that last. Often, mothers make significant sacrifices to ensure the well-being and success of their families.

Mother’s Day is an opportunity to show appreciation for all that mothers, by blood or not, do for us. It is a day to acknowledge their hard work, sacrifice, and unconditional love. It is also a time to reflect on the importance of family and the role that mothers play in nurturing and shaping the lives of their children. Moms rock!

Tips for creating the perfect DIY Mother’s Day card:

  1. Start with a clean slate

Start your handiwork with a blank card or a piece of cardboard paper. This way, you have complete control over the design and can personalise it to your liking. You get to illustrate your unique relationship with your mom on this card, so the sky is the limit!

  1. Pick a colour palette

Choose a colour scheme that you think your mom will love. You can use her favourite colours or choose colours that remind you of her. If you’re stuck here, think about the colours she usually wears, or her favourite items she’s used to decorating her home.

  1. Customise and personalise it fully

Add a personal touch by including a photo of you and your mom and include a heartfelt message. You can also add some decorative elements like stickers, washi tape, or ribbon to make the card even more special. In this instance, less isn’t more!

  1. Use quality materials

Use high-quality materials like nice cardboard, markers and pens to create a polished and professional-looking card. Don’t spare any of the fun here – you want Mom to see YOUR personality showing through. After all, she knows you better than anyone.

  1. Attention to detail is key

Pay attention to small details like the spacing of your text and the alignment of your decorations. These small touches can make a big difference in the final product. If your handwriting or spacing tends to be a little “wonky,” bust out measuring tools like a ruler to create your margins and writing outlines.

  1. (Loads of) practice makes perfect

Don’t be afraid to experiment with different designs and ideas. Practice creating a few different cards before settling on a final design. Your mom deserves the best, and sometimes that takes some figuring out. When you stock up on this project at your local PNA, get a few extra supplies to account for trial and error.

What to write on your Mothers’ Day card

Sometimes, it’s hard to put into words what makes our most beloved people so special to us. If you’re a tad stuck here, you get to rely on the greatest wordsmiths of our time and choose a quote about moms that really encapsulates what you feel for yours. We’ve gathered some quotes about moms that you can use to express to yours how much she means to you:

  • “God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers.” – Rudyard Kipling
  • “A mother’s love is more beautiful than any fresh flower.” – Debasish Mridha
  • “A mother is she who can take the place of all others but whose place no one else can take.” – Cardinal Mermillod
  • “The influence of a mother in the lives of her children is beyond calculation.” – James E. Faust
  • “The best place to cry is on a mother’s arms.” – Jodi Picoult
  • “A mother’s arms are more comforting than anyone else’s.” – Princess Diana
  • “A mother is not a person to lean on but a person to make leaning unnecessary.” – Dorothy Canfield Fisher
  • “All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.” – Abraham Lincoln
  • “Mothers hold their children’s hands for a short while, but their hearts forever.” – Unknown
  • “Being a mother is not about what you gave up to have a child, but what you’ve gained from having one.” – Unknown
  • “A mother’s love is the fuel that enables a normal human being to do the impossible.” – Marion C. Garretty

DIY tools for the ultimate Mother’s Day card

Now that you’re excited to create the perfect Mother’s Day card, here are a few DIY tools (which are available at a PNA near you) to build a project that will take mom’s breath away:

1.Scissors: A good pair of scissors is essential for cutting paper and trimming any excess edges. You want to keep this neat enough to display on the mantlepiece.

2.Glue: You can use glue sticks, craft glue, or double-sided tape to stick different elements of the card together. Avoid thick glue on thin cardboard, though!

3.Markers and pens: You can use coloured markers or pens to write your message or decorate the card with designs and patterns. You could even try out calligraphy inside the card if you really want your message to impress.

4.Cardboard: A sturdy cardboard paper serves as a perfect base for the card and helps it stand upright. If your mom is on the funkier, opt for a fun patterned cardboard style in her favorite colors.

5.Stamps and ink pads: Stamps and ink pads can be used to add decorative designs and patterns to the card. Try layering stamps for a fun, unique effect.

6.Ruler and pencil: A ruler and a pencil can help you measure and mark the card for precise cuts and folds. These will also help guide you if you want to add a long, heartfelt message to the inside of your card. Write out your message on scrap paper first, then rule out the appropriate number of lines with a light pencil.

7.Cutting mat: A cutting mat can protect your work surface from scratches while you cut and trim the paper and ornaments you’ve chosen. This is also a great bit of gear to have on hand anyway if you’re an avid crafter and don’t want to damage your furniture.

8.Embossing tools: You can use embossing tools to add texture and depth to the card. If you’re unsure how to do this, make sure to keep an eye on our socials for live tutorials at the Hobby-X expo this year!
