Have you ever heard of decoupage crafts? Whether you’re a die-hard crafting fanatic or just dabbling in it from time to time, decoupage is a great hobby to try. Why? Decoupage comes from the French word decouper which means ‘to cut out’. A cut-out of the paper design is then stuck on a surface using multiple layers of glue and sanded down to ensure a silky-smooth finish – easy! It can be created on most surfaces such as wood, tin/metal, Paper Mache, terra cotta, plastic, Styrofoam, glass, ceramics and canvas to name but a few. Generally, all decoupage crafts will start with:

  • paper with a neat design or imagery you’d like to transfer to another surface
  • sharp scissors
  • craft knife with a sharp blade
  • good 2cm flat brush or a larger one if working on furniture
  • fine grit sandpaper
  • sponge or brayer
  • ruler
  • waxed paper

Hint: Apply the glue to both the project surface as well as the backside of the item to be decoupaged.  If the paper is a bit thicker or sturdier, try wetting it slightly with clean water to help the paper become more flexible and pliable.

Lay a sheet of waxed paper over the decoupaged surface and using a brayer, smooth it out to release any trapped bubbles and glue.  Adding a layer of waxed paper between the print and your tool will protect the tool and keep it clean.
