5 DIY Holiday Card Ideas to put YOUR Spin on the Festive Season

The holidays have a very particular aesthetic. You know what we mean – red, green, men with robust facial hair,  some antlers thrown in here and there. We’re all familiar with the look and feel of the festive season because we’ve all seen it every year since we’ve been able to gobble down more than one mince pie in a sitting.  It’s familiar and it’s beloved, and it smells like cinnamon and sounds like bells. It’s also not particularly exciting, unless you make it.

As a PNA shopper, we know you’re a fan of customising your life and colouring your world, your way. We also know you’re probably itching to put your own creative spin on everything you do. So why not take the holiday motifs you already know, and transform them your way with DIY holiday cards? It’ll be so much more meaningful for the ones you love to receive hand-created messages with their gifts (or AS their gifts) than a little square cardboard tag with “to,” “from,” and a snowman wearing a hat on it! This is South Africa in December – that snowman is not on safe ground!

PLUS, when you create your own cards, you can include and exclude whatever messaging you want, meaning you can be much more non-denominational. ALL the people you care about can get a holiday card! We’ve come up with 5 fun DIY card ideas featuring PNA products that you can try this December. (P.S. If you want to send us one too, our head office address is in our footer! 😉)

1. Watercolour Ornaments

Just because it’s holiday-themed, doesn’t mean it can’t be elegant! These artsy, minimalist watercolour ornaments can make anyone look like a master painter, and they’re super quick to do. You can mix them up with a palette of your choice if you want to go more understated, and everyone on your list will get their own, unique combo of shapes, colours and sizes. These would be the perfect application for PNA’s broad range of watercolour paints, available in our stores across the country.

This festive season, show off your washi collection with these fun, easy washi cards. They’ll be a reflection of your personal style AND what’s trendy. You can browse washi tape in-store at any PNA and grab a roll that really reflects you.

3. Fingerprint Light Card

This card may not look it, because it’s so cute and fun, but it’s the ideal creative project to do with little ones! The mess and fuss are minimal, it’s just fingerpainting, and you get to put the finishing touches on a family-effort card that both you and your tot can feel proud to give to your loved ones.

This is a great way to use up any leftover craft paint you have lying around, as it only needs small amounts of each colour. To find this trendy brown cardstock, browse the paper section of your nearest PNA. We think the neutral background really tones down the rainbow and takes this card to a grown-up space while still being playful.

4. Christmas Cocoa Gift Card Holder

It can sometimes feel like you’re taking the easy way out by giving a gift card instead of a physical item, even if you’re actually receiving an even better one! The solution to this is to package it in a gorgeous, homemade card. This one’s for the slightly more advanced PNA crafters, but the final results are festive, fantastic, and so worth the time. Top off your Christmas cocoa cup with a fun range of stickers, decals and décor from PNA, and you can personalise a crafted cuppa for every one of your friends and family! It’s delicious DIY!

Leave a lasting impression with oh-so-rustic stamped festive cards. These are ideal if you need to make loads of copies quickly, but you still want to leave that “handmade with love” mark on everyone who scores one. Making your own stamps may sound a little daunting, but with top-quality yet affordable tools (like sharp craft knives) from PNA, the process is much easier than it appears. The fun thing about this project is that once you have these stamps, they’re reusable next holiday season and for all the ones to come!
