Craft up your own version of a “Braai Caddy” for Dad this Father’s Day.

What could be a more convenient gift for Dad than a “Braai Caddy” to hold and carry all the braai essentials (he might just need to carry the wood or charcoal in the other hand) straight to the braai on Sunday?

Even better – fill it up with Dad’s favourites. 😊

Here’s what we used to paint and decorate our caddy:

  • Wooden spice caddy (wooden blank)
  • Wood graining tool
  • Craft paint in colours of choice (we used Heritage’s Deep Space, White Flake and True Red Acrylic Paint)
  • Water-Based Scumbling Medium (Heritage)
  • Polyurethane hard varnish
  • Soft paintbrush, sandpaper, cloth
  • Father’s Day/Dad/Braai vinyl stickers (optional – can be added to the caddy or a mug)
  • Ribbon of choice (optional – to round it off as a gift)
  • Various Braai accessories and favourites to fill the caddy.

Instructions:

  1. Sand the caddy lightly to get a nice smooth finish.
  2. Paint the entire caddy with the White Flake paint – 2 coats should be sufficient.
  3. Leave to dry totally and give a light sand colour.
  4. Paint the handle red.
  5. Mix some of the Deep Space Acrylic Paint with a little Scumbling Medium (2:1).
  6. Paint the two sides of the caddy with the Deep Space mixture and while the paint is still wet, drag the wood graining tool over the paint the get the special effect.
  7. Leave to dry.
  8. Using the Deep Space mixture, paint the rest of the caddy (careful not to apply too much paint). While the paint is still wet, take a sponge, damp cloth or your fingers and blend the paint until you are happy with the result. If there is too much paint on, you can just wipe it away.
  9. Leave to dry.
  10. Varnish with a few layers of the hard varnish.
  11. Finish off with a ribbon of choice, vinyl stickers and add the braai essentials (spices, braai tongs, firelighters, matches, cloth, apron) and a few of your Dad’s favourites.
