Year-end exams | All you need to know

Tests, exams, practical examinations – these can be stressful and down right terrifying at times. So how can students make sure that they are in top shape for these all-important tests? It all comes down to good nutrition, being adequately prepared and having the correct resources on hand. It’s also good to add that having a sound support structure in place to help them out when the tests become a little nightmare-inducing is also a MUST. Let’s take a look at what you need to know to ace the exams once and for all!

Nutrition

Kids need all the help they can get! That’s why we recommend a little brain food. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is letting them eat fast food, chips and other sugary snacks to keep their energy levels up. However, this is not only harmful to your long-term health, but can also negatively affect exam performance.

Four of the best foods for brain health and memory are blueberries, wild salmon, avocados and walnuts. Berries such as strawberries and blackberries can actually delay memory decline by two and a half years and are commonly referred to as a ‘super food’.

Oily fish, like salmon, avocado and walnuts are great sources for omega 3 which helps with brain power, as well as reduce risks for cancer, heart disease and arthritis. Combining complex carbohydrates like whole-wheat bread and sardines are a healthy alternative to a garage pie and will keep their bellies satisfied for longer.

But the best way to start your day is with a hearty breakfast. Our suggestion: eggs, any way to like them! Just one egg contains vital nutrients, 6g of protein, vitamin B12 (which helps convert glucose into energy) and less than 100 calories – depending on how you cook it. Boiled, fried, poached, scrambled – anyway you look at it, it sounds delicious!

Don’t turn your nose up just yet! Did you know that green tea is a good alternative to high-caffeine drinks? It provides antioxidants to help boos concentration. Unlike coffee that can cause you to become dependent on it and cause you to become more fatigued after prolonged use, green tea contains vital antioxidants and boosts alertness and concentration.

Study material

Let’s face it, we can always use a little extra reading material to help calm the exam nerves. Luckily, we have a wide range of study materials to choose from. From primary and high school to study guides even used at Uni, have a look at some of our favourites here.

Support structure

But what can you as a parent do to help your kids cope with exams? Well, we basically already covered this in a previous blog. Click here to find out how you can help organize their schedules, help with revision and how incentives can help keep them motivated throughout this difficult time.

Studying hard, sleeping well and eating right are all ingredients to achieving top marks. To stay functioning at 100% throughout the duration the exams, it’s vital for a student’s brain to be alert, healthy and primed for memorization. So keep away from the carbs and reach for a healthy energy boost!
