PAINT MEDIUMS | #ColourYourWorld

paint mediums

Do you get inspired by an empty canvas? Think of all the glorious possibilities! But selecting the paint is another story if you haven’t tried it before. On top of this, walking through aisles of different paint mediums can be downright intimidating – especially if you don’t know what you are looking for! Whether you’re new to painting or looking to learn a couple interesting facts, have a look at some of the most common paint mediums.

Acrylic Paint Medium

Are you new to painting? We recommend working with acrylic paint as it tends to dilute and clean with water, dry quickly and is generally very easy to work with. This type of paint is great for murals since it is completely waterproof.

Paint acrylic paint on: paper, cardboard, wood and canvas. Acyclic can either be painted directly on or over a paint primer.

Hint: Acrylics can be painted as thick or thin as desired. For a thinner consistency, mix the paint with a little bit of water to dilute it.

Oil Based Paint Medium

Oil based paint dries slowly which makes it a great medium for blending colours, and once dry, new layers of paint can be applied on top without disrupting underlaying layers. Because the paint is slow drying, artists should consider working on several projects at once since completing a single painting can take months to dry completely! Remember to use solvent or even dishwashing liquid to clean your brushes – easy!

Paint oil-based paint on: canvases or paper primed for oil which have been treated with a primer first. The primer will ensure that the medium doesn’t rot the canvas over time. Lock in the paint by varnishing the completed, dry piece.

Hint: When buying oil-based paint, be sure to get 2 of each primary colour (one having a cooler and the other a warmer tone). This will give you a larger range of colour to mix and play around with. Watercolour Paint Medium

Arguably the least expensive of the paint mediums, watercolours are quite a transparent medium which makes it difficult to hide mistakes in a painting. The reason behind this is that once the paint dries, it dries lighter, making brushstrokes more apparent. An advantage to using this lightweight formula, is that it makes cleaning very easy – just add water.

Paint watercolours on: paper, card or a special canvas specifically for watercolours.

Hint: Watercolours don’t come in the colour white. The white in watercolour paintings comes from the medium you’re painting on.

So how do you know which medium to choose for your next project? We suggest trying it out and getting to know the formulas for yourself. Start off by browsing our wide selection of paints at your nearest PNA store and don’t forget to pick up a surface for squeezing out your paints and mixing them on. The traditional painters palette with a hole for your thumb makes it easy to hold. Look out for wooden, glass or even disposable paper options.
