Macrame Decorations by Alet van Wyk

Materials

  • 5mm cotton twine string
  • Scissors
  • Ruler

Step 1

Cut 2 pieces of string.

  • 60 cm string
  • 1.5m string

Fold both strings in half.

Step 2

Place the long piece of string behind the short piece of string.

Step 3 – Make a half square knot

Start on the right side. Move the far right piece of string over the middle two pieces of string, to the left, and behind the far left string.

Step 4 – Make a half square knot

Move the far left piece of string behind the middle two strings and pass it up through the loop on the right from behind. Pull tight gently, while holding the middle two cords straight and together.

Step 5 – Make a half square knot

Start on the left side. Move far left string to the right across the middle two strings and behind the far-right string. Move far right string behind the middle two strings and pass it up through the loop on the left, from behind.

Step 6 – Completing your square knot

Move the far right piece of string behind the middle two strings and pass it up through the loop on the left from behind. Pull tight gently, while holding the middle two cords straight and together.

Step 7 – Completed square knot

Step 8

Measure down 3 cm and make another full square knot.

Step 9

Measure down 3 cm from the first square knot and make another full square knot. Push square knot up to the first square knot.

Step 10

Measure down 5 cm from 2nd square knot and make another full square knot. Push square knot up to the first square knot.

Step 11

Measure down 7 cm from the third square knot and make another full square knot. Push square knot up to the first square knot.

Step 12

Cut off all strings at the bottom. Hang in a tree.
