Looking for a birthday party theme with a twist?

“Who in the world am I?’ Ah, that’s the great puzzle!”

Searching for the perfect birthday party theme for your youngster? Have you thought about an Alice in Wonderland theme yet? The amazingly wonderful fantasy characters will make for incredible party decorations.

The most recent film of Alice in Wonderland was in 2016, but this fairy tale goes back until 1865 when the first book, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, was published, and in 1871, the second book, Through the Looking Glass.

Alice, around 7 years old, goes on a wondrous adventure by falling through a rabbit hole and drinking a bottle’s content indicating ‘Drink Me’. At the end of the adventures experienced, Alice reveals that everything was likely to be part of a dream.

Sounds like the perfect party theme since Alice in Wonderland represents the child’s struggle to survive in the confusing adult world. Alice (just like our children) has to overcome the open-mindedness that is characteristic of them to overcome the world of adults.

Alice in Wonderland Birthday Party

We suggest keeping every detail close to the book’s theme with an actual tea party accompanied by dainty teapots, cookies, biscuits, crumpets, and jam. Play soundtracks from the films in the background to create the perfect atmosphere.

Your daughter will be ecstatic to dress up as Alice or your son as Mad Hatter, and guests can be innovative with their costumes too. Provide them with a list and images to choose their favourite characters – from White Rabbit, the Queen of Hearts, to Tweedledee and Tweedledum.

Alice in Wonderland Decorations

  • Set up a long table using a colourful or checkered tablecloth with all sizes and mismatched colours of teacups, saucers, chandeliers, etc. Use giant teacups, doll-house-sized teacups, and odd chairs of different heights. Place a large armchair at the head of the table for the birthday girl or boy.
  • Use colourful patio or beach umbrellas and decorate them with dots or crepe paper to resemble mushrooms. Tilt some of them to different heights.
  • Use colourful paper lanterns in strings between trees and bushes.
  • The Dormouse can be represented by a hidden plush animal in one of the teapots.
  • Alice in Wonderland-related items, such as little golden keys and keyholes, can be scattered across the table.
  • For guests to enter, decorate a door representing a rabbit hole, a looking-glass, or a play tunnel.
  • Make signs saying, ‘This way.’; ‘That way.’; ‘Up.’; ‘Down’, using paint on wood or cardboard.
  • Decorate the walls with clocks stopped at tea-time, playing cards (standard size and giant from cardboard) and the floors with a chessboard pattern and scatter giant chess pieces around.
  • Create flamingos to (mis)-match the rest of the décor with a free template.
  • Make rabbit paw tracks for the floor leading to various paths in the house or garden.
  • Stick googly eyes on flowers, door knobs and other items.
  • If you have a small inflatable pool, use that to represent the pool of tears.
  • Hang some opened umbrellas from the ceiling using DIY vulture heads pasted to them.
  • Place a sign saying, ‘Don’t step on the mome raths.’ Then create momes using two pencils of different colours together and glue some fluffy fabric or coloured feathers on top of them.
  • Decorate a rose bush with white and red roses.
  • Place a dollhouse near the table with an Alice-like doll in it.

Décor possibilities for an Alice in Wonderland-themed party are endless, as are the art and craft materials from your nearest PNA store.
