Pastels come in all shapes, consistencies and colours and are a favourite amongst all ages. But have you ever thought about mixing it up and experimenting with the pigment? Pastels are simply ground pigments that are mixed with a binder and then pressed and dried to hold their form. Depending on the amount of binder used you will either get a soft, hard or oil-based pastel. So, let’s take a look at different ways you can use hard pastels like chalk to create art that the kids will love!

FUN FACT: the word pastel comes from the Italian word pastello and means paste. How interesting is that?

Don’t these look absolutely stunning? This works with any type of design under the sun. Cut out any shape and have the kids draw a border around the cut-out with chalk pastel. With some cotton wool, brush the chalk away from the stencil to create a glowing effect.
