3 DIY Projects that Look Store Bought

We’ve all been there – gawking over lavish home decorative pieces, spread over pages and pages of your favourite monthly mag. From urban inspired living spaces to the minimalistic elegance of modern townhouses, you know exactly how you would decorate your space if you had the financial means. Well, what if we told you that you could make those expensive items yourself? From paper art statement pieces and colour blocked clocks to modern one-of-a-kind pillowcases, surround yourself with beautiful DIY Projects that look expensive- but don’t break the bank!

DIY Projects that look expensive #1: Dragonfly Origami

Create a statement paper art piece that is sure to get your friends’ tongues wagging! We’ve all seen the origami birds and even butterflies climb the walls in many magazines, but we thought about mixing it up. Have a go at folding your own dragonfly origami with brightly patterned paper. Arrange them on the wall, paste them on a canvas or have them hang freely from a bar with strings. How you would like to display them is entirely up to you! Click here for the video tutorial on how to make DIY dragonfly origami: https://goo.gl/E89DrB

We just love how paper arts and crafts add enormous aesthetic value to any space without requiring significant investment or skill. It is easily substituted for any store-bought piece and while it might take a while to craft, you have the last say when deciding on the size, colour and shape to best fit your living space. For a dreamier feel, opt for a hanging paper heart garland against a plain wall. All you’ll need is some heart shaped paper, string and glue! Click here for more paper art inspiration.

DIY Projects that look expensive #2: Colour Block Clocks

We just adore the look of these modern wall clocks- and the best part is that they are super easy to make.

You’ll need:

  • Wooden clock base
  • Clock kit
  • Acrylic paint in a colour of your choice and brush
  • Painters tape
  • Sand paper

Directions

  1. Sand your clock to get a smooth texture, then tape off half the wood with your painter’s tape.
  2. Paint the one half of the wood with the colour paint of your choice. Make sure you don’t have much paint on the brush when you do the edges near the tape or it’ll bleed.
  3. Once the paint is dry, slowly remove the tape and assemble your clock kit as instructed.

Not only do these make for beautiful DIY wall decorations, they are the ideal trendy gift – hint hint! Click here  for the full DIY tutorial.

Instead of spending hundreds of Rands on store bought decor, create your own one-of-a-kind scatter pillows. The hardest part of this projects? Probably waiting for the paint to dry. Let’s get started!

You’ll need:

  • Potato or sponge stamp available at PNA
  • Knife to carve the design

Directions:

  1. Cut off a thin straight layer of the potato so that you are left with a flat surface. (Or purchase a sponge stamp to use from PNA.)
